What services we offer in Hammersmith, W6
Parquet floor sanding in Hammersmith
Hammersmith's Victorian and Edwardian terraces — particularly in Brackenbury Village and the streets running off Shepherds Bush Road — frequently contain original herringbone parquet in hallways and reception rooms, often still in excellent structural condition beneath layers of old varnish or adhesive from carpet removal. Our parquet floor sanding service covers the full process: cleaning off old adhesive, regluing or replacing any lifted or missing blocks, gap filling throughout with resin and the floor's own sanding dust, and finishing with your choice of lacquer or hardwax oil. Gap filling is something we strongly recommend for all parquet work — it stabilises the floor structure, reduces draughts between blocks, and gives a noticeably cleaner result after sanding.
Floorboards sanding and repairs in Hammersmith
The solid pine floorboards in Hammersmith's period terraces are typically in good structural condition even when they look tired on the surface. Worn finish, surface scratches and gaps between boards are all entirely normal after decades of use — and all entirely fixable. Our team begins every job by refitting any loose or squeaking boards before sanding starts, replaces any damaged sections with reclaimed seasoned pine matched to the existing floor, and fills gaps with resin and dust for a clean, draught-free result. The floor is then sanded through progressive grits and finished with a durable lacquer or hardwax oil — whichever suits your floor and how the room is used.

Engineered floor renovation in Hammersmith
Hammersmith's newer riverside developments and converted apartments — particularly along Distillery Wharf and Chancellors Wharf — commonly have engineered wood floors installed over underfloor heating systems. These floors require extra care before sanding: wear layer depth must be confirmed, moisture levels in the subfloor checked, and the appropriate finish selected to remain stable over the underfloor heating. Our technicians carry out all of these checks at the free survey stage and only proceed when the floor is genuinely suitable for refinishing. We use Bona, Loba and Osmo products — both lacquer and hardwax oil available.

Featured project — Parquet floor sanding and restoration in Hammersmith, W6
This Hammersmith project involved a herringbone parquet floor in a mid-Victorian terraced house near Brook Green — a floor that had been covered by carpet for an unknown number of years and whose condition was uncertain until the carpet was lifted on the day of our site survey.
What we found was encouraging: the parquet blocks were solid oak, the majority still firmly bonded to the subfloor, with only a section near the bay window showing significant lifting — the result of historic damp from a window that had since been replaced. That area needed the lifted blocks removed, the subfloor cleaned back and re-levelled with a skim of adhesive compound, and the blocks refitted individually once the surface was stable.
Once all repairs were complete, the floor was sanded diagonally across the herringbone pattern — the correct approach for parquet, which prevents the machine from cutting against the grain of blocks facing different directions. The sanding ran through four grit stages from coarse to fine, with hand-scraper work along the skirting edges and in the bay window recess where the belt sander couldn't reach cleanly. Gap filling was carried out using the floor's own oak sanding dust mixed with resin, producing a colour match that blends naturally rather than standing out as a repair.
The client chose Bona Traffic Natural as the finish — a commercial-grade, water-based lacquer with a near-natural appearance that provides excellent durability for a busy family hallway and sitting room. Applied in three coats with a light buff between each, the finished floor looked as the original floor would have when it was first laid.

Frequently asked questions
How much does floor sanding cost in Hammersmith? Floor sanding in Hammersmith W6 typically ranges from £25 to £45 per square metre, depending on floor condition, finish type, and any repair work required. Gap filling, staining and board replacement are quoted separately. We provide fully itemised quotes with no hidden costs.
How long does floor sanding take in Hammersmith? Most residential jobs in Hammersmith take one to two days for a standard room. Parquet projects with repairs typically take two days. The floor can be walked on lightly within a few hours of the final lacquer coat and returned to full use within 24 hours.
Do you offer free site visits in Hammersmith? Yes — free, no-obligation site visits are available throughout Hammersmith, Brook Green and Ravenscourt Park. Your surveyor will assess the floor in person and provide a written quote, usually within 24 hours.
Can you sand engineered floors fitted over underfloor heating in Hammersmith? Yes, though it requires extra care. We check wear layer depth and subfloor moisture levels before any work begins, and select finishes that remain stable over underfloor heating systems. Hardwax oils from Osmo or Loba are often the better choice for these floors as they flex with the wood's movement more readily than lacquer. We'll advise on the right approach at the survey stage.
Do you work in Hammersmith riverside apartment buildings? Yes, and regularly. We coordinate with building managers where required, work within agreed service hours, and our dustless equipment keeps communal areas clean throughout. We can provide method statements and insurance documentation for managing agents on request.
