We sand, repair and refinish wood floors right across South West London — from the period townhouses of Chelsea and Battersea through to the suburban semis of Wimbledon, Surbiton and Kingston — using dust-free equipment and a free, no-obligation site visit before any work starts. Whatever's under your carpet, restoring it almost always beats replacing it, both in how the finished floor looks and what it costs you to get there.
South West London covers a lot of ground, and the housing reflects that. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Clapham, Battersea, and Wandsworth tend to have original pine floorboards. Chelsea and Kensington's period townhouses are more likely to have parquet block in the reception rooms. Further out towards Wimbledon, Richmond, and Kingston, you'll find a mix of 1930s semis with parquet hallways and newer engineered floors in more recently built or converted properties. Wherever you are in the zone, we've sanded and restored floors of all these types.
We've been restoring floors across south west London since 2004, working throughout Chelsea, Battersea, Clapham, Wandsworth, Putney, Wimbledon, Richmond, Kingston, and Surbiton. (Most of this area sits inside the ULEZ boundary, worth confirming for your specific postcode if it affects access.)

What We're Usually Dealing With Across South West London
The terraced housing in Clapham, Battersea, and Wandsworth was generally built with solid pine boards, typically 19–25mm thick. The period townhouses in Chelsea and Kensington often have parquet block in the hallway and reception rooms, sometimes in patterns like herringbone or basket weave. Further out towards Wimbledon and Kingston, the 1930s semis tend to mix parquet hallways with engineered or laminate flooring in kitchens and extensions.
What comes up most often across the area:
- Old lacquer or varnish layers, sometimes applied without proper sanding between coats
- Loose or lifted parquet blocks, particularly in the older Chelsea and Kensington properties
- Limited wear layer on engineered floors, especially where a floor's already been sanded once before
- Gaps between floorboards in the older terraces, caused by seasonal movement in the timber
- Surface wear in hallways and through-routes, where most daily foot traffic goes
All of it is fixable, and in most cases, the floor ends up in better condition than when it was first laid, simply because today's finishes outlast what was originally used.
Our Floor Sanding Services Across South West London
Pine and Hardwood Floorboard Sanding
We sand the main floor area with belt and drum sanders, working through to edge sanders against the skirting and hand tools in the corners. We start with a coarser grit to clear the existing finish, then step down through progressively finer grits to leave a smooth surface ready for refinishing. Where a board's too damaged to save, we can source matching replacement boards and blend them in before sanding starts.
Parquet Restoration
Parquet has to be sanded diagonally across the block pattern, roughly 45 degrees to the grain, otherwise the machine cuts against half the blocks and leaves an uneven finish. We check every parquet floor for loose, lifted, or missing blocks first, re-securing what's come away and sourcing reclaimed blocks for any gaps so the pattern stays consistent. Our parquet floor repair team handles this regularly across the area's period townhouses.
Engineered Wood Floor Sanding
Engineered floors have a genuine hardwood layer on top of a plywood base, typically 3–6mm thick, and that layer only allows for a limited number of sands. We always measure the wear layer first and won't sand a floor if there isn't enough left to do it safely — more on our engineered floor sanding and refinishing approach.
Standard Gap Filling Between Floorboards
Smaller gaps are filled with a flexible resin mixed with sawdust from your own floor, so the colour matches exactly. Wider gaps take timber slivers instead, glued in and sanded flush. Either way, gap filling always happens after the main sand and before any finish goes on.
Finishes We Use
We stock and apply finishes from Bona, Loba, Junckers, and Osmo.
- Water-based lacquer (Bona Mega, Bona Traffic HD): fast-drying, low odour, available from extra-matt through to gloss. Bona Traffic HD is the toughest option, well suited to hallways and busy through-routes.
- Hard-wax oil (Osmo Polyx and similar): a natural, penetrating finish that's easy to spot-repair without redoing the whole floor.
- Wood floor staining: we can change the tone of your floor before sealing, from a light whitewash through to a deep walnut, with test boards brought along first so you see the actual colour under your own lighting.

Our Floor Sanding Process, Step by Step
- Preparation — furniture moved, nail heads punched below the surface, loose boards or blocks secured.
- Main sanding — belt or drum sander on the main area, edge sander around the perimeter, hand tools in the corners. Our dust extraction system captures up to 99% of particles throughout.
- Repairs — gap filling and any board or block replacement, carried out after sanding and before finishing.
- Finishing — first coat, light abrasion, second coat (occasionally a third). Water-based lacquer needs roughly 2–4 hours before light foot traffic; oil needs longer, typically 12–24 hours.
- Aftercare — written care instructions and product advice specific to your chosen finish, plus general floor cleaning and polishing guidance for the years in between.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the same team cover both inner SW postcodes and areas further out like Kingston or Richmond?
Yes — we work right across the zone, from Chelsea and Battersea through to Kingston, Surbiton, and Richmond. Coverage doesn't change the standard of work or our process.
Can engineered floors be sanded if they've already been done once before?
Sometimes — it depends on how much of the original wear layer is left. We check this at the free site visit and won't sand a floor if there isn't enough material to do it safely.
Is your sanding process actually dust-free?
Our dust extraction equipment captures up to 99% of airborne particles during sanding. No process is completely free of dust, but it's significantly cleaner than older sanding methods.
What's the best way to deal with loose parquet blocks in older properties?
We re-secure loose blocks during the restoration and source reclaimed blocks to match where any are missing, so the original pattern stays intact rather than showing an obvious patch.
Do you offer free site visits anywhere across South West London?
Yes — book online or call, and we'll assess the floor and provide a detailed quote before any work begins, wherever in the zone you're based.

Local Project: Sanding And Refinishing Of Teak Mosaic Fingers Flooring in Southwest London in Southwest London — 1 February 2017
This floor restoration project we are going to tell you about is something common for many UK households – an old parquet blocks hidden under a carpet. Usually, the people don’t even know about the unique flooring they have in their homes. When the carpet loses its good qualities, most of the people are facing a dilemma – to buy a new carpet or to give another chance to the real wood flooring. You probably have already suggested what was the decision of our clients. After a conversation with our surveyor and inspection of the condition of the floor, they received a free detailed quotation. The plan was to lift and dispose of approx. 42 sqm carpets, grippers and underlay, then to strip off the old surface, buff it and seal it with hardwearing lacquer.
The project started as planned, when our team arrived the area was clean of any furniture and they started immediately. The floor was sanded in three rounds, which removed the old finish with all the scratches and imperfections, this process levelled the surface. The step that followed was to fill the gaps between the parquet blocks, for this task our guys used a standard method, spreading a mixture from resin filler and sawdust remains from the sanding. It’s good to know that this method is applicable for gaps up to 3mm. After the holes are filled, the floor needs to be buffed which will smooth the surface and prepare it for the final step – the finish. The clients decided to leave the choice of a product to us - Junckers HP Commercial is what we use for both domestic and large-scaled projects. This is a water-based lacquer and with low VOC, the preferred sheen was gloss. The entire job took 2 days to our team.
