Can You Stain a Floor Without Sanding?

What happens if you stain a floor without sanding it first?

Staining without sanding is only effective if the floor is already in good overall condition—smooth, clean, and free of deep scratches or damage. Without sanding, the stain won’t properly penetrate the wood, and any existing imperfections or old finishes will show through. If your floor is uneven, worn, or has a previous finish, skipping sanding will result in a blotchy, uneven colour and poor stain adhesion. Sanding is essential for a smooth, consistent finish and long-lasting results.
