All Aspects of Your Floors

Proper subfloor preparation is important for successful wood floor fitting and installation. Ensuring the subfloor is clean and level is essential for the longevity of your wood floor installation. Before the fitting of your new floor commences, there are a couple of steps that need to be taken to ensure that the wood floor installation will be precise and the result will last for a long time. We also check the moisture levels to prevent any risks of expanding or cupping the new flooring.

Dust Control

Dust control in wood floor fitting is a major issue that requires careful planning will be necessary before the floor laying process begins. It's important to note that cleaning the floor properly will immensely improve the adhesion. We recommend protecting and sealing off adjacent rooms and their contents, as this will reduce the risk of unwanted grime entering the other rooms on site. Our wood sawing equipment can capture only part of the dust, so doing the above mentioned will help our work and reduce yours, after the service.

Checking Moisture Levels

Checking the level of moisture in air and subfloorMoisture level checks are critical in wood floor installation to prevent expanding or cupping. Our fitters will always make sure that it's in the acceptable norm, to prevent any risks which will cause expanding or cupping of the new flooring.

To avoid such troubles, we recommend letting the flooring acclimatise to the humidity and temperature in your house, especially during winter and autumn. You don't have to do much, other than bring the packs inside and let them stay there for up to a week, depending on the type of flooring.

Our team of experienced fitters also take the same measurements from the flooring planks, to make sure that the product which will be getting installed is up to par with the industry standards.

Subfloor Preparation

Proper subfloor preparation is a key step in wood floor installation itself including the sub-floor being cleaned, levelled, ensuring that it's solid and gapless, as well as checking whether or not the humidity is within acceptable limits. All dust and debris have to be removed to avoid unevenness and improve the adhesives' bonding. Getting an underlay will also be of great benefit, especially with floating installations, as it will help even the surface and will reduce the transmission of sound.

Hardwood floor fitted after door frames trimmingWe also recommend using a liquid damp-proofing membrane, which is applied on top of the concrete, above which the hardwood floors will be installed. Its purpose is to help protect the new flooring from any rising damp.

Doors / Door Frames Trimming

Door trimming is often required in wood floor fitting to ensure a seamless installation of the floors afterwards, so door trimming will often be required as a follow-up action. Our teams use special trimmers to adjust the drop of the door frames, to make sure that your new boards will fit nicely below, leaving you with nothing less than a perfect result.

Methods of Wood Floor Installation

Different wood floor installation methods, such as floating, glue-down, and nail-down, are available:

Floating

Click: This is a glueless method, typical for engineered floor fitting and laminates. Each plank connects to the neighbouring ones through a locking profile, which secures the planks in place without the need for adhesives. As the planks are not bonded directly to the sub-floor, laying an underlay for additional sound insulation or damp-proofing can be of extra great benefit.

Sideview of a tongue and groove system for installationTongue & Groove: Each plank connects to the others through grooves and tongues, much like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. This method allows the installation of flooring planks with a thickness of 18 mm and over.

Glue-Down

Using professional adhesives can sometimes be the only way of laying wooden flooring. FlooringFirst uses high-quality flexible glues for application on concrete, or in areas where pipes can be present below. This method is appropriate for parquet floor fitting, or mosaics and patterned panels.

Nail-Down

The name says it all. What it does not mention is that there is no trace of any nails visible, as they are placed below the surface of the plank at a 45 degrees angle, pushing the plank down, and backwards to the previous row. Using nails to fasten the planks is advisable for hardwood with a thickness of 18 mm and over.

Junckers installation system

An alternative method is using special tongue screws, invisible to the eye as well.

The Junckers Way

This type of installation is typical for Junckers flooring only. It has been invented by the company as an alternative, which allows damp-proofing or sound-proofing insulations to be placed below the flooring, regardless of the subfloor structure - concrete, battens or wooden flooring. It uses metal clips, which hold every 2 planks in a pair.
