Should You Mop Floors Before Staining?

Should you mop the floor before applying wood stain?

Yes, but only using a technique called water popping. After sanding the floor, lightly mop it with water to raise the wood grain. This makes the surface more absorbent, helping the stain penetrate deeper and more evenly. Allow the floor to dry for about 30 minutes before staining. Water popping is especially useful when working with dense woods or dark stain colours, ensuring a rich, consistent finish.
