To determine if a wood stain is no longer usable, start with a visual and smell check. Discard the stain if you notice any of the following:
-
It’s become thick, rubbery, or stringy
-
The product has separated and won’t mix back together
-
There's a skunky or sour odor
-
Visible mold growth or clumps, especially in water-based stains that resemble cottage cheese
Using bad stain can ruin your floor’s finish, so when in doubt, it’s safer to replace it.
