How Long Does Floor Stain Take to Dry?

How long does it take for wood floors to dry after staining?

Drying time varies by the type of stain used:

  • Oil-Based Stains: Dry to the touch in 12 to 48 hours and fully cure in about 72 hours.

  • Gel Stains: Take the longest—24 hours to the touch, and up to a full week to dry completely.

  • Lacquer-Based Stains: Dry extremely fast—often in just 15 minutes.

Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and allow extra drying time in humid or poorly ventilated spaces before applying any topcoat.
