What Is the Proper Direction for Installing Flooring?

How should flooring be installed in terms of direction?

The traditional and most common way to install flooring is parallel to the longest wall or in the direction of the room’s main light source. This layout creates a sense of flow and depth, especially in smaller or narrower spaces, making rooms appear larger and more cohesive. However, layout may also depend on subfloor structure, room shape, or design preferences—for example, running boards perpendicular to joists for added stability.
