Cherry FlooringCherry wood has cream coloured sapwood, which is in a great contrasts to the reddish heartwood. The heartwood the colour can vary from a pinkish red to dark red. The North American Cherry also has a small dark brown gum veins part of the character of its type. The Cherry goes through extreme degree of colour change with pronounced darkening from a pale pink colour when fresh milled to a dark reddish colour when its fully aged. The process occurs within a few weeks in direct sunlight and by rich oxidation, kept out of light, over a 6 to 8 months term. This wood can be described as a moderately hard and heavy; it is very strong and stiff making it an ideal choice for wood flooring. Its solid structure makes Cherry highly resistant to shock and damage. Cherry flooring is famed for its grain as much as its warm, homely colours. Each board features a fine, closed grain. Cherry takes a finish very well, however light to natural finishes are recommended. This wood is commonly used for high end furniture, cabinets, interior millwork and flooring due to its distinctive characteristics. Beautiful markings, gum streaks and pin knots all help to make it the unique choice that it is. Restoration of Cherry Flooring Sanding cherry wood floors may take more attention to detail and time, in comparison to other wood floors. This is due to its classification as a hardwood flooring. It may take going through the whole range of sanding grids during the floor restoration to prepate the floors for the new coats. |
