Basics of Hardwood Floor Sanding

Hardwood floor sanding is a complicated process made up of different steps. Each step needs a considerable amount of patience, expertise and experience along with specialised tools and machines for the best results. It is best to hire dedicated companies for the job and to avoid making unnecessary expenses.

Hardwood floor sanding is one of the best things you can do when renovating your home. It is a much better option than replacing your flooring entirely and significantly cheaper too. The process polishes and renews old hardwood floors and breathes new life into them. In fact, nothing can compare with the look and feel of the flooring timber after a well handled hardwood floor sanding process. Newly laid solid wood floors or parquet flooring feel nothing like with the exquisite feeling that old and dry timber offers after the sanding.

Many people wonder why they should go with hardwood floor sanding when they can replace their flooring tiles entirely, while some others are intimidated by the prospect of ruining their floors effectively and spending extra money too. Well, as mentioned before, hardwood floor sanding is much cheaper than replacing the whole flooring. And though the process in itself is complicated, experienced hands can handle it very well and produce amazing results. It all depends on choosing the right hardwood floor sanding company for the job and the steps they take for the process.

Ideally, the floor sanding process starts with the proper preparation. Nails, staples and certain adhesive, which are used to keep the floorboards together are taken care of. These materials can severely damage the sanding machines used for the sanding and make the restoration impossible. After the initial preparation, the old coatings are removed to flatten the floor. Irregularities in height between the floorboards are sanded out, holes and other abnormalities are filled in and damaged boards are replaced. The sanding is usually done by specialised belt sanding machines and edging tools. These machines are designed in such a way that optimises the smoothing process and minimizes damages to the surrounding. The dust produced is collected in a bag, to be used later.

Now the process moves on to filling gaps. The dust collected from the sanding is mixed with a resin wood-filler, and applied to fill the gaps. Every opening on the floor is filled in with this resin and left to dry for at least an hour before the excess dried up fillers are removed by another round of sanding. After that, a sealant is applied to the sanded floor. Our range of products for the job are varnish, oil and hardwax-oil. Oil penetrates the wood and ensures a long lasting finish while wax forms an outer layer that acts as a protection against normal wear and tear. Varnish, on the other hand, offers better durability but requires to be coated with polyurethane. Our trusted brands include Osmo oils, Bona lacquers and Junckers lacquers and come highly recommended.

Again, the results depend almost entirely on the company you hire for the job. It is best to look for companies that employ trained hardwood floor sanding and repairing personnel along with the best machinery too. Make sure you have a thorough consultation with the company about your needs and take a service guarantee if possible too. That way you’ll be assured the results that you want.
