Maintenance Guide

Bamboo flooring is rapidly becoming one of the most popular types of residential flooring. Here are a few reasons why you should choose a bamboo floor:

  • Bamboo floors are easy to clean.
  • Bamboo floors are ideal for allergy sufferers as they do not promote dust or harbor dust mites.
  • Bamboo flooring is an inexpensive alternative to hardwood flooring, usually costing 25% to 50% less than hardwood.
  • Bamboo flooring is long-lasting.
  • Bamboo flooring can be installed over numerous types of sub-floors such as: wood, sheathing grade plywood, vinyl tile, or Oriented Strand Board.
  • Bamboo floors are environmentally friendly. They use a quickly renewable crop. Made with safe resins, they have extremely low formaldehyde emissions and make excellent floors for healthy homes.

Bamboo flooring is manufactured from mature bamboo canes, which have at least three years growth and are selectively harvested from managed forests. Chinese Phyllostachys Pubescens is well known for its distinctive features such as having a straight main stem, which has little difference between upper and lower diameter.

It has thick texture, dense fibre and lower content carbohydrate than some other types of wood used for floors, which is apt to resist worms or mould. amboo flooring is the fastest growing grass plant and is Environmentally the best product available for hard flooring.
Bamboo flooring is tougher and has more elasticity than Oak, Beech and other well known wooden floors. Our new strand woven bamboo is twice as strong as other flooring.

Bamboo foors is equivalent to Hardwood in its durability, looks, and installation and it offers a timeless beauty and appeal. Another great advantage of Bamboo floors is price. Due to the speedy growth rate, the cost of fully stained and sealed bamboo floors can be found for half the cost of planked Hardwood. Today you can find Bamboo in many typical business buildings, hotels, restaurants and offices. Bamboo floors can be installed using any of the customary Hardwood flooring installation methods including glue, staple and nail down. This article is in no way meant to steer you clear of traditional Hardwood floors, but if you are looking for a distinctive attractive floor that is eco-friendly and will supply years of character and warmth to your home, bamboo may be just what you are looking for.

Restoring Bamboo Flooring - How Difficult it is?
Sanding bamboo flooring may take more attention to detail and time, in comparison to other wood floors. This is due to its classification as a hardwood flooring. It may take going through the whole range of sanding consumables during floor restoration to remove the existing sealing and prepate the floors for the new coats.

When ordering bamboo flooring how much extra should I order to allow for waste?
As a rule of thumb for non-professionals, add 7% to 9% for waste and cuts depending on your skill level and the layout of the area.

What is the difference between “horizontal” and “vertical” bamboo flooring?
A natural bamboo stock is hollow and the walls of the plant are fairly thin. Strips of bamboo are therefore laminated together to make our 5/8” flooring. The terms “horizontal” and “vertical” refer to the manner in which bamboo strips are laminated together. In the horizontal style, the strips are laid flat so the top surface shows the bamboo’s natural growth rings, or “knuckles.” In the vertical style, the strips are turned on their sides and laminated together in long, slender rows creating a different appearance.

Is “carbonized” bamboo flooring stained?
No. Carbonized bamboo is darker in color because it has undergone a change, not a stain. During the manufacturing of the product, the strips of bamboo are boiled and change color (becoming browner in tone). This process also softens the material.

So carbonized bamboo is softer than natural bamboo?
Yes. The process that changes the bamboo to the beautiful carbonized color also softens the product approximately 30%.

Installing bamboo flooring
Bamboo flooring installation is making sure the subfloor is dry, clean, and level. Dirty subfloors will not bond well with the adhesive, and subfloors that are not dry will eventually cause rot. If not level, the bamboo flooring will squeak when walked on. If you are competent in home repair and good with your hands, you may be able to complete the bamboo flooring installation on your own. In some cases, with certain types of bamboo flooring, a professional will be needed.

Bamboo flooring may be glued down using a moisture barrier flooring adhesive. After applying the adhesive to the subfloor with a trowel, the bamboo flooring planks should be immediately placed. You may also install bamboo flooring using a nail gun over plywood or particleboard. Once starter rows are secure, subsequent planks should be nailed directly above the tongue at a 45-degree angle to face.

Bamboo Flooring Cleaning & Maintenace
After installing the bamboo flooring, you will care for it in a similar way to hardwood floors; frequent dusting/sweeping, occasionally mopping, and use of wood cleaners. With regular care, bamboo flooring will add a stylish, beautiful component to your home for many years to come.
